Democratic Design

Space for Cooperation, Collaboration and Compromise

In “Democratic Design,” Aedes examines how architecture, planning processes, and public spaces can promote democratic engagement and social cohesion. We designed the exhibition graphics as well as the identity and catalog for the project.

The program includes an exhibition, a series of lab talks, and a catalog.

The exhibition design reflects the temporary and collaborative nature of the exhibition: the exhibition system consists of existing components; only the printed fabrics, which serve as information carriers, were newly produced. Due to the density of information, the design is very clear, but still leaves room for the individuality of the projects presented.

The visual identity reflects the character of the project: structured and unpredictable elements enter into dialogue. A clear, non-serif font is mixed with handwriting, creating clear and concise forms with strong irregularities. The distinctive lettering is used by all participants for their communication on social media and websites.

The publication shows all projects as well as contextualizing texts and is designed in a very clear and systematic way. Here, too, the colors and font mix play a major role.
